Rehan Disability And Orphanage Home: Noble Work Without Any Aid

People who selflessly work for the welfare of the common men and betterment of the society are rare and deserve full appreciation. We feel so proud when we met such noble souls. The other day I happened to meet Alka Sharma, the most enterprising women who run Angel disability and orphanage home at village Rehan in Nurpur area of Himachal Pradesh.

What is noteworthy about her noble work is that she is running the home just on her husband salary without any financial aid from any quarter including govt. Its, indeed, great sacrifices. In the contemporary materialistic world, it requires strong will to escape the lure of money and power. There is an impression that people are inherently selfish. In the highly materialistic world, their priority is cash, possessions and status.

But then there are still people in this materialistic world who are able to resist the materialistic temptations and devote themselves to the society.

The 39-year-old Alka Sharma of Rehan village is among them. This kind-heart lady is looking after 94 children, neglected by
the society or unwanted by their parents, in her age home in Rehan village near Nurpur in Kangra distt of Himachal Pradesh. She could have easily afford to live an cozy life in city but not to her liking. She had an penchant for doing something special and so she ventured into an area where even big people fear to tread.

"It is very challenging to run an disability and orphans age home in rural set-up. My husband had own building and land in
the village. so we decided to put it to best use.As such, the Angel disability and orphans age home was set-up. Initially, we started from a scratch but within four years, the age home is looking after 94 children", said Alka. Besides, She has her three children and has to look after them too.

Most of the disability and orphans age homes are run, ostensible to get financial aid from govt agencies, but not Alka-run home. She knew it that govt financial aid was difficult to come without the patronage of "netas". Alka didn't want any politics as her sole aim was to serve the society and contribute her mite.

Alka doesn't carve out any help from the govt despite Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur's vow that hi government was committed to ensuring the welfare of orphan and physically challenged children Under the CM’s Bal Seva Yojana Under tis scheme each children is given Rs. 3,500 a month , out of which Rs. 2,000 is given by the Centre and Rs/ 1,500 by the state government.

But I am dismayed as to why Alka's home of orphans didn't adopt children orphaned due to the pandemic in Himachal. As many as 15 children were orphaned due to the pandemic in Himachal. Out of them five are from Mandi district, four from Una, three from Hamirpur, two from Kangra and one from Solan district. She will do more good if some orphan children are adopted by her home. Wish all the best for her Angel home.
