Chandigarh: The idea of posing for a selfie with your daughter originated from a small village in Haryana? Sunil Jaglan, the man behind #Selfiewithdaughter, is an energetic 33-year-old sarpanch of village Bibipur in Jind district who wants people to welcome daughters to the world with pride.

Announced on June 9, the initiative went viral on social media in barely a few weeks.

People shared their selfies, tagging #SelfiewithDaughter, while responding to Prime Minister Narender Modi’s call under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

Under the campaign, participants were asked to send a selfie with their daughters to a number on Whatsapp. Three chosen selfies of the 794 received from across 12 states will receive a cash prize apart from a trophy and certificates.

This is not Sunil’s first awareness campaign. A father of two daughters aged three and two, Sunil began promoting gender awareness after the birth of his first daughter in January 2012.

“After my daughter was born, I was surprised to see the hospital staff refusing the sweets being distributed. I was asked why I am celebrating the birth of a girl child in my house. Similarly, villagers thought that I am welcoming a baby boy when they saw the grand celebrations in the village the next day,” recalls Sunil Jaglan.
Sunil also noticed that eunuchs only gave blessings to households with a boy child.

“We carried out a separate sensitization program for eunuchs on gender equality,” he said.

Having completed his studies in the city, Sunil was not very familiar with the discrimination against the girl child. He has dedicated himself to the cause of gender equality after becoming the sarpanch in 2010.

“I was involved in research on poor sex ratio in my district and promoted women’s participation in social issues,” he said.

Sunil has been organising initiatives to empower women on June 19, his birthday. He credits his parents for his ideology.

“I have three sisters who are equally well read as I am. My parents never discriminated amongst any of us,” he said.
