New Delhi: Budget carrier SpiceJet has launched a discounted "Hand Baggage Only" fare for passengers who travel light.
The new scheme will offer a discount for passengers who only carry hand baggage and have no luggage to check in. It will be available on most direct domestic flights with a minimum 30 days advance purchase.
SpiceJet said the new scheme will provide a discount of Rs 200 on a one-way flight, while for a round trip, the discount can be as high as Rs.1,000.
Hand-baggage allowance remains the same as before: one handbag up-to 7 kg per passenger, plus a standard sized shoulder laptop bag or ladies purse, SpiceJet said.
For those who book these fares but later decide to check in luggage, a fee of Rs. 500 for upto 10 kg, and Rs 750 for up to 15 kg, will be payable at the airport during check-in, SpiceJet said.
The government had last week shot down a proposal from low-cost airlines to charge extra for check-in luggage. Minister of State for Civil Aviation Mahesh Sharma said on Saturday, "I want the airlines to continue with the present system (of allowing up to 15 kg free check-in baggage) and at the same time provide incentives to those flyers who travel light."
A senior DGCA official said on Friday that SpiceJet, Indigo and AirAsia had approached the regulator with the idea of a "zero baggage fare", where passengers with no check-in luggage would be given a discount. DGCA or Directorate General of Civil Aviation is the country's aviation regulator.
They also proposed that travellers could pay for every kilogram of checked-in luggage.
