Panchkula: drama was witnessed at the General Hospital, Sector 6, here today when a person alleged that his elder brother died as doctors were busy attending to the chief guest, Health Minister Anil Vij, who had come to inaugurate a computerisation project.
After the victim’s brother, Gaut Ram, “screamed” for help before the Health Minister and told him about the delay by the doctors in attending to the patient, Vij immediately ordered a probe and sent a team of doctors, but the victim had died by then. Kalka resident Chet Ram (59), who had a severe breathing problem, was referred from the Kalka hospital to the General Hospital here this morning.
“It is a serious matter and I have ordered a probe by the Director General, Health. Officials responsible for the delay, that led to the death, will face action,” said Vij. The family alleged that the victim was lying unattended for two hours. “We were requesting for a doctor, but were told that they were busy in the function. I have lost my brother,” said Gaut Ram.
He said, “We were referred by the Kalka health authorities because it was a serious case. How can they leave a serious patient to die?” Later, the doctors tried to revive the patient, but in vain. Meanwhile, patients were a harassed lot as the doctors were busy with the Health Minister from 12.30 pm till the evening.
Apart from the inauguration of the project, Vij inspected the emergency unit, toilets, operation theatre, pharmacy, ultrasound room, wards and some departments of the hospital and expressed concern over the shortcomings.
He ordered inquiries where serious irregularities were found.

Under this system, registration slips of patients, their medical history and treatment will now be made available online.
