Twenty-four Haryana Khap Panchayats Back Jat Protests for OBC Status

Chandigarh: Twenty-four Khap panchayats from Haryana have come together in Sonipat to support the umbrella body’s agitation to secure OBC quota for the Jat community.

The news comes after a decision by Akhil Bharatiya Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti (ABJASS) to disrupt the supply of basic amenities to the Capital.

The representatives of 24 Khaps, including Maham Chaubisi, unanimously decided to choke water, power, milk, railways and roadways services to Delhi on September 28.

“The time has come to show the strength of Jats. Reservation for the Jat community is an old demand which was neither addressed by the Congress government nor the BJP. Jats are capable of everything and we can go to any stage to achieve reservation,” said Khap leader Sangram Singh.

Haryana’s Khap panchayats have strongholds in Jat-dominated Sonipat, Panipat, Rohtak, Jund, Hisar and Kurukshetra districts of the state.

If the ABJASS and Khap panchayats come together, they could pose a tough challenge to the state government.
