Chandigarh: The decision of the Khattar Government to withdraw the 10 per cent quota for Jats and four other castes under the special backward class (SBC) category in the educational institutions is set to prove a boon for candidates under the general category .
With the cut-off touching new highs in neighbouring Delhi, Chandigarh and Punjab , thousands of general candidates seeking admissions to colleges, universities and technical institutions would stand to gain from the government decision.
Earlier, the state government had directed the educational institutes to keep 10 per cent seats reserved for the SBC category vacant in all courses till pendency of the petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In an order dated September 27, Chief Secretary DS Dhesi ordered various state departments to withdraw seats reserved for Jats, Jat Sikhs, Rors, Tyagis and Bishnois. The decision was later conveyed to the High Court on Monday.
“It has been decided by the state government that for the current academic session, 10 per cent seats reserved for the SBC shall be filled by general candidates. It has been further decided that the matter will be reviewed before the next academic session in case the pending court case is not decided before the start of the next academic session,” the Chief Secretary’s order said.
On July 27 this year, the High Court had stayed the Haryana government’s notification, issued during the previous Hooda regime in 2013, of reserving seats for the five groups in educational institutes and government jobs.
