Dehradun: Communal tension gripped Kotdwar town of Pauri Garhwal district following a clash between two communities over a petty issue late Monday night. The agitated residents belonging to one community protested at Jhanda Chowk, demanding immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the fight.
Three persons were injured in the clash and some vegetable shops were vandalised by members of a community, prompting the police to impose Section 144 in the town. One of the seriously injured persons has been shifted to a private hospital in Dehradun.
BJP workers forced the closure of the markets in the town to demand arrest of the accused.
Chief Minister Harish Rawat described the incident as unfortunate and instructed officials concerned to monitor the situation in order to avoid any untoward incident. Rawat said Uttarakhand had a tradition of communal harmony and residents should abstain themselves from indulging in communal clashes.
SDM Gopal Ram said the situation was normal and the district administration was keeping an eye on the suspected individuals.
Sources said the situation in the Lakripadav locality of Kotdwar town turned ugly after residents from two communities clashed over a petty issue.
