Srinagar:  A Colonel of the Army's elite Para Commando force has been killed in an encounter between terrorists and security forces in the Manigah forest area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.

The Commanding Officer of 41 Rashtriya Rifles Colonel Santosh Mahadik, who was leading a search party, sustained serious bullet injuries in the gun battle that began this morning in a dense forest area of Haji Naka.

The colonel, who was from the elite regiment of Para Commandos, was evacuated and rushed to a hospital where he later died.

A policeman was also injured in the encounter.

Three to four terrorists are believed to be hiding in the area.

Sources say the same group of terrorists broke the security cordon after another encounter in the same area last week. The group is believed to have crossed over from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir into Indian territory a few weeks ago.
