Dehradun: With the onset of the winter, the state is again facing the brunt of shortage of electricity. The electricity generation and distribution companies blame frozen Himalayan rivers for the widening gap between demand and availability of power in the state.
The Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) data clearly highlights that at present the demand of electricity is 32.48 million units against availability of 31.42 million units in the state. The hydropower projects have contributed only seven million units of electricity as generation has been adversely affected due to freezing of rivers, and closure of the Chilla hydropower project for renovation, modernization and upgrade.
The UPCL has imposed an emergency cut of three hours in rural areas of Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts. Madhusudan, an official spokesman for the UPCL, said private power companies had agreed to sell electricity to the state during the lean winter time.
He said 200 MW would be received through the energy banking system from Haryana while six million units would be procured through the Indian energy exchange system to bridge the gap between demand and and availability of electricity in the state.
The state faces a shortage of 212.89 million units of electricity as 830.93 million units are available this month against the demand of 1,043.74 million units in October. Officials have expressed concern that the gap between the demand and supply of electricity will further increase in the coming months.
