Karnal: Two constables of the anti-cow slaughter task force were among five people arrested on Thursday for the killing of a migrant worker on Wednesday.

SP Pankaj Nain said three members of a cow protection vigilante group from Indri had also been arrested.

Preliminary investigation revealed the incident was the outcome of mistaken identity where the policemen and members of Gau Raksha Dal, an unorganised group of volunteers involved in checking smuggling of bovines, opened fire at a Canter ferrying migrant workers.

Khush Noor, 25, of Ballamajra village in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead. Another man, Ehsaan, suffered a minor injury.
“Our teams examined the role of those present at the naka in the wee hours of Wednesday. We have arrested the accused and their roles will be probed. Bullets have been sent for forensic examination,” said the SP.

Meanwhile, police sources said that after realising that they had killed an innocent man, volunteers and policemen fled from the naka and tried to conceal the incident.
