Shimla: Five Congress workers  sustained burn injuries here on Monday when the petrol doused to burn the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest against the BJP accidentally caught fire.

The mishap occurred outside the Deputy Commissioner’s Office where party men led by state Congress president Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and other senior leaders, including MLAs, were staging a protest against the BJP-led NDA regime for unleashing political vendetta against AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Protests were staged at all the 17 district organizational headquarters in the state.

Eyewitnesses said five workers who were close to the effigy got caught in the sudden bursting of flames as fire engulfed them. While one worker Manoj Adhikari sustained burns on his hands, face and head and has been admitted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital for treatment, other four were discharged after treatment. Five women workers who fell down in the chaos when flames engulfed some workers, sustained minor injuries.
The injured were rushed to the hospital immediately after the mishap. Those present on the occasion included Sukhu, Chief Parliamentary Secretaries Mansa Ram and Rohit Thakur, MLA Rajesh Dharmani, former MLAs Harbhajan Bhajji, Kuldeep Pathania and Subhash Manglet.

Addressing the workers, Sukhu said the Congress would not tolerate attempts by the BJP to launch a malicious political vendetta against Congress party and its leaders. “The BJP-led NDA government has launched hidden malicious agenda against the Congress Party and senior leaders under its slogan “Congress Mukt Bharat” announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during 2014 Lok Sabha Elections,” he said.

He said that Modi-led BJP government, in order to hide its failure to fulfill the poll promises of bringing back black money, reduce price-rise and provide employment to unemployed youth, was trying to divert the attention of the general public by targeting Congress leadership.
