Mandi/Shimla: A massive landslide blocked the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway-21 near Dawada in the Mandi district at 9.30 am on Monday. No loss of life was reported. The highway was opened for small vehicles in the evening.
Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Kadam said a team of technical experts was examining the strata of the hill and the road would be fully restored after getting nod from the team.
The National Highway Authority of India deployed heavy machines to remove debris from the site. Four JCB and heavy earth-moving machines have been deployed to clear the blockade.
The police diverted traffic from Bajaura in Kullu district via Kotala in Mandi district.
“Huge boulders suddenly started rolling down and within minutes the entire hill-lock came down sliding but fortunately no vehicle was crossing the road at that point of time and as such there was no loss of human life,” said state Public Works Department (PWD)
officials.
The cause of landslide could not be ascertained as there were neither rains nor any hill cutting activity on the road and a technical team is visiting the spot to know the exact cause of the landslide.
The landslide covered an area of 150 metre length of the road and huge mound of earth and rocks fell in river Beas, a Superintending Engineer said
