New Delhi: One child was killed as over 500 shanties were demolished during an anti-encroachment drive by the Railway police in a slum area of Delhi last night.
Residents of the slum in west Delhi's Shakur Basti area allege their homes were demolished without any warning or notice. The girl died allegedly when a piece of furniture fell on her while the shanties were being bulldozed.
Sources in the Railways however say a number of notices were issued to them to vacate the Railway land where a new passenger terminal is proposed to be constructed.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the area late last night. Condemning the incident, he said "This is highly condemnable. God will not forgive them."
He also said his government has suspended three senior officials for not providing relief material to the residents. He later tweeted: "There are court orders to raze properties of some rich n politicians in Delhi. Those orders r never implemented (sic)."
