Amritsar: The Congress has hinted at aping Bihar’s ‘managathbandhan’ formula in Punjab for the 2017 Assembly elections. The state unit is contemplating an alliance with like-minded secular parties with a positive agenda of development.
This was revealed by Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh during his maiden visit to the holy city after being named as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief, though he would formally take charge in Bathinda on December 13.
Party leaders, including the newly-appointed chairperson of Congress campaign committee Ambika Soni, also paid obeisance at Golden Temple.
“Any secular party in Punjab can join us provided there is a mutual understanding. I don’t foresee any threat from SAD (Badal) because they have already lost the faith of people by being party to unholy instances like sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and later shielding the police officials who were responsible for firing at peaceful protesters in Kotkapura. This coupled with farmers’ plight, bad governance, unemployment, industry crisis and non-payment of salaries has generated a general discontentment.”
“The AAP hardly has any policy, programme or agenda for Punjab. I invite Arvind Kejriwal to jump into the fray, but he too would be ineffective to gain, looking at his dismal performance as Delhi CM,” the Amritsar MP said.
The interests of the youth would find priority on the Congress agenda as 70 per cent of total population of the state is below 40, he said, adding, “We will talk about their problems and create an atmosphere for their bright future in both urban and the rural areas.”
“Instead of vilification campaign against the ruling party, we would run a positive campaign. We would look for secular parties to unite with us for the 2017 polls.
In coming days, I would be personally holding chat sessions with students in educational institutions, universities and colleges to get their point of view about the system they would endorse. Our endeavour would be to win their confidence at first instance,” he said.
