Pithoragarh: The maximum temperature in the Kumaon region has risen by 3.6°C above normal while the minimum temperature has increased by 5.3°C in the past 60 years.
Weather Department officials at Pantnagar University said due to global warming, heat was gradually increasing in the region.
“In the past few years, while the maximum temperature has risen by 1°C, the minimum temperature has increased by 4.6°C, which is a clear indication of growing heat in the atmosphere in the Kumaon region,” said Dr HC Kushwaha, in charge of the Weather Department at Pantnagar University.
Kushwaha said the effects of global warming were accelerating in the region due to increasing pollution and urbanisation.
He added the effects of global warming were being felt in the Terai region of Kumaon. Weather remained almost dry in November here.
“The effects of global warming were being obeserved in fruits and crops also. The wheat crop is changing its time of germination while the fruit crop of peach, pear and apple was ripping before the usual time,” he added.
