Chandigarh: The suspense over the selection of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader in Punjab continues as the party MLAs today unanimously authorised Congress president Sonia Gandhi to nominate the CLP leader and other legislative office-bearers like the Deputy Leader.
As many as 40 of the 42 party MLAs converged at the Congress Bhawan here and discussed the tricky issue of selection of the CLP leader in detail for over an hour in the presence of the two central Congress observers --- Sat Vrat Chaturvedi and RPN Singh and two senior party leaders --- the All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary-cum-party incharge for Punjab Affairs Shakeel Ahmed and AICC Secretary Harish Chaudhary.
PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh stayed away from the event mainly to avoid giving an impression that he was supporting someone for the CLP leader’s post.
The decision on the selection of the CLP leader and other office-bearers, Shakeel Ahmed indicated, could be taken by Sonia Gandhi in a day or two.
The selection of the CLP leader would be made by the AICC president on the basis of the feedback given to her by the two observers who were dispatched by the party high command to Chandigarh is to sense the mood of the party MLAs.
“The broad criterion is to take everybody along,” said Shakeel Ahmed. He also indicated the party was not going to ‘dump’ two senior leaders --- Partap Singh Bajwa and Sunil Jakhar --- after recent the appointment of Capt Amarinder Singh as the PPCC president.
“The two leaders will be given big responsibilities,” said Ahmed. Asked what had forced the party to go in for replacement of Sunil Jakhar, Shakeel Ahmed said, “The exercise was made to start afresh.”
After their deliberations with Sat Vrat Chaturvedi and RPN Singh, 40 party MLAs who were present in the open session signed on an authorisation letter unanimously urging AICC president Sonia Gandhi to nominate the CLP leader and other office-bearers.
After a round of open discussion, the two central observers held one-to-one interaction with each of the MLAs seeking their suggestions about the name of the CLP leader. Both Shakeel Ahmed and Harish Chaudhary, however, stayed away from one-to-one closed-door discussion of the central observers with the MLAs.
MLAs Mohammed Sadique and Raja Warring, however, were not present.
