Dharamsala: Many eyebrows were raised as vetran BJP leader and ex-chief minister Shanta Kumar stayed awya from “Virbhadra Singh Hatao Himachal Bachao” rally organized at Zorawar Singh stadium here on Wednesday.
BJP MP from Kangra had issued a statement on Tuesdy demanding resignation of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to dispel the notion that he was not attending the rally due to his close relations with the latter. However, Shanta Kumar was one of the most prominent leaders of the BJP in the state, especially from Kangra district. Hence, his absence from the rally raised many eyebrows.
Interestingly, union health minister JP Nadda has come all the way from Delhi to attend the rally.
While speaking at the rally, former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Prem Kumar Dhumal said that Virbhadra Singh has been alleging that the cases against him was a conspiracy by the Central agencies. However, almost all the cases registered against Virbhadra Singh pertained to a period when he was Union Minister for Steel in the UPA government. “Even if a conspiracy had been hatched against Virbhadra Singh it was done during the UPA government in power,” Dhumal said.
Dhumal asked the people of Kinnaur present in the rally if they had ever earned Rs 6 crores from their apple crop. He said the cases against Virbhadra Singh were registered after he revised his income tax returns and increased his income from a few lakhs to crores.
The apple income of Virbhadra Singh grew for just three years suddenly and now has again fallen, Dhumal alleged.
Dhumal said the present Congress government would complete its term and state would have mid-term elections. The BJP would target 60 plus seats in the elections.
JP Nadda, Union Minister for Health, who was also present at the rally, said Virbhadra Singh had defamed Himachal. He said that earlier Himachal was known for honest and hardworking leaders.
However, now people ask about the cases going on against the CM of the state. It seems Virbhadra Singh has no conscience. Had Virbhadra conscience he would have resigned long back.
JP Nadda said that it was only during the NDA government that Himachal had got its due. It was during the NDA government under Atal Behari Vajpayee that Himachal got the industrial package and now the NDA government under Narendra Modi has restored the special category status to Himachal that was terminated by the previous UPA government. Under the special category status Himachal would now get grants under 90:10 pattern from the union government, Nadda said.
Nadda also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for increasing the esteem of the country at international level.
Srikant Sharma, national secretary of the BJP and in charge of Himachal, BJP said the charges against Virbhadra Singh were very serious. Srikant said the BJP had started a campaign to get Virbhadra Singh removed as Chief Minister in the state and it would continue till he resigned.
The state president of BJP Satpal Satti said that BJP had already made a clean sweep in the panchayat elections in Bharmour area of Chamba and it will do so in the entire state.
The BJP workers tried to move towards Vidhan Sabha after the rally and it was announced by their leaders from the stage that they would gherao Vidhan Sabha. The police, however, thwarted their efforts and they relented after raising slogans against the state government. The former minister and prominent BJP from Dharamsala, Kishan Kapoor termed the rally as success.
