Chandigarh: Continuing its drive against illegal slum colonies, the demolition squad of the UT Estate Office today carried out a major drive against illegal shanties at Kalyan Colony in Khuda Lahora village here. The shanties were located near the bridge over the Patiala Ki Rao rivulet.
Officials overseeing the demolition drive said over 100 structures were pulled down by JCB machines.
The drive continued for over three hours amid heavy police presence.
While slum-dwellers lamented that they were left homeless in the harsh winter despite an assurance from UT officials, those supervising the operation said ample time had been given to the slum-dwellers to vacate the area. Of the 80 persons who had applied for one-room tenements in Dhanas and Mauli Jagran, 60 were found eligible and had been allotted alternative accommodation.
A senior UT official said around 250 acres of prime land were under the illegal occupation of slums in 18 slum colonies. Ever since Colony No. 5, spread over 107 acres, was cleared of encroachments in 2013, around 200 acres in 13 slum colonies had been cleared and handed over to the UT. After Colony No. 5, the next largest colony (No. 4) is spread over 40 acres. To make the city slum-free, all slums are being demolished.
