Won't Mind Taking Bus to Work: Chief Justice on Odd-Even Car Plan

New Delhi: Chief Justice TS Thakur on Sunday said the Supreme Court judges want to help in curbing air pollution in the national capital and even he won't mind boarding a bus to reach the court.

He supported the Delhi's government's decision to allow even and odd number cars to occupy the Delhi roads on alternative days from January 1 in a bid to curb alarming levels of air pollution.

Justice Thakur said he would not mind walking down to the Supreme Court from his Motilal Nehru Marg residence or even boarding a bus.

"If a judge of Supreme Court can pool cars (with brother judges), it sends a message to the people that we have no problem," he said. "We can walk down or even take a bus."

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal welcomed Justice Thakur's support. "I want to thank the Chief Justice. His support is a big encouragement for Delhi. If Supreme Court judges carpool, it will encourage other people to follow," Mr Kejriwal said.

Supporting the other side in the debate, the BJP says that AAP government's plan is impractical. "I don't think this will help in any way. One has to see the practical aspect of it. Looks absolutely ridiculous," said Union Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan.
