Fidget Spinners Bluetooth Versions Are Catching Fire While Charging

Fidget spinners might seem like harmless fun, but you may want to think twice about buying the pimped-up Bluetooth connected version of the toy.

Two women have reported that their children's fidget spinners have unexpectedly set fire while charging.

The fidget spinners - both of which used Bluetooth to connect with phones to play music through built-in speakers - exploded while charging for less than 45 minutes.

The findings suggest that the Bluetooth fidget spinners might be missing safety standards and are at high risk of dangerous failures.

The items have become the must-have toy for youngsters, with retailers quickly selling out.

The pocket-sized gadget is a modern version of an old spinning top, with a three-pronged piece of plastic or metal, which moves around a central weighted disc.

Although popular with kids, schools across the US have been banning the devices because of the distraction and noise they cause in lessons.

They were originally marketed as tools for children with autism and ADHD – but in recent months have been brought into class by pupils who do not have learning difficulties.

'I was downstairs and all I heard was, "fire, fire." The fidget spinner wasn't smoking, it was in flames', Kimberly Allums from Gardendale, Alabama told WBRC.

She said the device had been on charge for around 45 minutes.

'I just really want people to be aware of this because a lot of people have been inboxing me reaching out to me leaving messages saying my child has this same fidget spinner.

'Anytime, you have anything that needs to be charged, we really need to be paying attention to the manufacturers of these, doing our research.'

Some of the new models, available online for as little as $3.60 (£2.70), include features such as LED lights and speakers, which require a battery and a charger.
