Dera Bassi: The National Green Tribunal here on Thursday ordered the closure of 57 industrial units in Dera Bassi, including Nectar Life Science Ltd (Unit II) situated at Saidpura village, Dera Bassi, after the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) found these violating pollution norms and also operating without complying with the prescribed standards.
A Bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore, passed the orders after noting the findings of special inspection teams of the CPCB, headed by its Member Secretary, which informed that the industries were operating without consent, that too on the premises which are in the name of other closed industries.
The inspection teams had also taken samples of 29 industries for ascertaining the status of the groundwater. According to a report, nine industries have polluted groundwater. Among these, five industries were found non-compliant on other parameters.
The NGT also directed the Chairman, Punjab Pollution Control Board, to ensure the compliance of this order and file a report in this regard to the tribunal. The NGT also directed the Electricity and the Water Supply departments to immediately disconnect the supplies of the industrial units found violating pollution norms.
On August 28, the NGT had directed the CPCB to constitute teams of senior scientists for conducting an inspection and submit a comprehensive report. Following the orders, nine teams were constituted, which inspected the industries in two groups, one at Focal Point, Dera Bassi, and the other outside it.
An applicant, Karnail Singh, and other villagers had contended that there was violation of environmental laws and pollution norms by the industries in Dera Bassi.
Krunesh Garg, Member Secretary, PPCB, Patiala, said they would comply with the orders of the NGT.
