Labour activist Nodeep Kaur was, finally, released from jail after she was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Kaur was arrested at Delhi border by the Sonipat Police on January 12 for supporting labours' rights .
As was the court observation in Disha Ravi case, the High Court in this case has also said that "there was nothing on record with regards to section 360 (kidnapping). Therefore the High Court has ordered bail for Ms Kaur".
Hearing in Nodeep case was adjourned on Wednesday by the court after police failed to put her medical reports on record. The court had earlier registered a suo motu case over her "illegal confinement".
There is almost a reign of terror let loose by the authorities over farmers' protest. Anyone, who is associated or a sympathizer or support protesting farmers, he is framed and put behind the bars. Modi govt hasn't spared even women . Labour activist Nodeep Kaur and environmental activist Disha Ravi are the worst victims. They have been punished just for being supportive of struggling farmers.
The 23-year-old Nodeep Kaur is a Dalit woman hailing from a family of activists . As her parents are associated with a farmers’ union and sister Rajveer Kaur a member of Bhagat Singh Chhatra Ekta Manch, labour , activist Novdeep was an eye soar to the BJP govt in Haryana. Nodeep's sister Rajveer Kaur is also a Ph.D student at Delhi University’s Department of Punjabi.
Ms. Nodeep after lockdown started working at a factory in Haryana’s Sonipat to financially support her family. She also joined the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, which works for the workers’ rights in the Kundli Industrial Area. She is also supporter of the farmers’ agitation. That was her undoing and was arrested by the Haryana Police on charges of attempt to murder, rioting, and assault to deter a public servant from discharging his duty.
Her arrest sparked media debate only after U.S.-based lawyer Meena Harris tweeted in support of Nodeep Kaur. Ms. Harris shared media reports alleging sexual assault on Ms. Kaur in custody. Earlier, the local court had denied bail to her in the case.Nodeep’s sister had alleged that she was beaten up by the police, and she had injuries on private parts.
The Sonipat Police had alleged that a police team had gone to Kundli Industrial Area that day after they received information about the alleged manhandling of management and staff of an industrial unit, and attempts to extort money from them. According to police, Ms. Nodeep and her associates attacked the police with sticks, causing injuries to seven personnel. Following the incident, she was arrested, but her associates managed to escape.
The court will consider separately her allegation of illegal confinement by the police, her advocate Harinder Deep Singh Bains told media persons today following the court order. It will also look at her medical records at a different date, he said. "
It was sheer coincidence that Nodeep Kaur was arrested over a labour protest demanding higher wages during the ongoing farmers' agitation against three new central laws. The Kundli border point between Delhi and Haryana is among the many where the protesting farmers have camped up over the past many months.
Surprisingly, not much was heard about the labour activist until February 6. It was only after Meena Harris tweet that we came to know labour rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured and sexually assaulted in police custody." Her tweet carried images of a mob in India burning her own photo and another of a masked woman holding up a poster demanding Ms Kaur's release. The so called ever-vigilant Indian electronic media wrapped her arrest in carpet.
Long Live "Independent Indian Electronic Media",
